The Institute of Medicine says that women need at least 46 grams of protein a day, and men need at least 56 grams a day. Here are the top 10 sources of protein for vegetarians 1. Greek Yogurt Greek yogurt, which has the whey strained out of it, is a great source of protein. A 6-ounce cup of Greek yogurt has 15- 20 grams of protein. That’s much more than regular yogurt, which has about 9 grams of protein. This probiotic food also has a lot of vitamins and minerals. Eating Greek yogurt all the time will help your digestive system stay healthy, boost your immune system, help with weight loss, stop high blood pressure, lower bad cholesterol, and fight yeast infections. 2. Lentils Lentils is another good choice for protein. But they are not a full protein food because they don’t have all nine important amino acids. One cup of boiled lentils has 18 grams of protein. There are many good health reasons to eat lentils. They give energy, lower the risk of heart disease, help keep a normal body weight, and keep the digestive system healthy. 3. Edamame Edamame is a full protein food, important amino acids you need in your diet. One cup of cooked edamame has 17 grams of protein. It also has manganese, selenium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, zinc and vitamin B1. 6. Chia Seeds Another good source of protein for vegetarians is chia seeds. Two tablespoons of chia seeds will give you 9.4 grams of protein. They are also one of the best plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Chia seeds can help with digestion, treat anemia, give you energy, control blood sugar, stop aging signs, and boost brainpower. 7. Quinoa Quinoa has all nine important amino acids, and is a full protein source. One cup of cooked quinoa has 8.14 grams of protein. Quinoa also has fiber, iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and folate. Eating quinoa every day can lessen swelling and lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and colon cancer. I recently shared a video on bone broth and viewers asked if there is a vegetarian option with similar properties. The answer is yes and no. Collagen is an animal product, as are bones, so there’s not some special vegetarian bone water out there. There are, however, an abundance of plants that support the body’s production of collagen which can be used to make a similarly mineral-rich plant-based broth. You want to make a broth because the body easily absorbs it, allowing ready assimilation of nutrients that protect bones, teeth, tissues, and organs. A plant based option to the traditional bone broth works the same or if not better. Turns out, the most beneficial nutrients and electrolytes in bone broth can be found in vegan-friendly sources. Plants offer richer sources in collagen building blocks and, in addition, provide nutrients not found in sufficient quantities in meats or broth. Therefore, it seems pretty clear that using a bunch of wholesome plant-based ingredients is going to be way more healing. You can add whatever ingredients you like to this broth. You might think that the seaweed would make this broth a little overwhelming, however, it isn't really noticeable and the little bit that is noticeable is actually delicious. It pairs wonderfully with the mushrooms, ginger, and chili. Collagen Rich Vegetable Broth 12 cups / 2 3/4 liters filtered water 1 tbsp coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil 1 red onion quartered (with skins) 1 garlic bulb smashed 1 chili pepper roughly chopped (with seeds) 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger roughly chopped (with skin) 1 cup greens such as kale or spinach 3-4 cup mixed chopped collagen rich vegetables and peelings: cabbage, beets, red peppers, red/sweet potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, carrots, avocado, soy, fresh mushrooms, leeks & celery 1/2 cup dried shiitake mushrooms 30 g dried wakame seaweed 1 tbsp peppercorns and 2 tbsp ground turmeric A bunch of fresh coriander or other herb of your choice (optional) 1/4 cup nutritional yeast flakes for extra flavor and vitamins and sea salt Instructions Simply add everything to a large pot. Bring to a boil then simmer, with the lid on, for about an hour. Once everything has been cooked down, strain the liquid into a large bowl. Serve immediately with some fresh herbs, for decoration or cool for later. It also freezes well. Vegetables that are orange in color, like carrots, squash and sweet potatoes, are rich in vitamin A, which restores and regenerates damaged collagen. Tomatoes, red peppers and beets contain the antioxidant lycopene. The presence of lycopenes in these types of foods helps to act as antioxidants, which in turn increases collagen production. Dark green vegetables are excellent food sources that contain collagen producing agents. Rich in Vitamin C, regular consumption of kale, spinach, dandelion greens, collards, and asparagus helps to strengthen the body’s ability to manufacture collagen and to utilize the protein effectively. Cabbage is also one of the most well known foods containing collagen producing agents. Green beans contain hyaluronic acid which is a vital anti aging substance. Hyaluronic acid increases skin hydration, keeps skin moist and smooth, boosts skin elasticity, increases collagen synthesis, nourishes healthy skin cell growth, promotes firm skin tone and supports healthier joints. Avocados provide vitamin E to help prevent collagen breakdown, as well as healthy fats to improve the health of skin cells. Whether you use soy milk, cheese or tofu, soy contains plant hormones that serve as antioxidants, which prompts collagen production and helps to block enzymes, that can age the skin. Garlic is one of the best sources of sulfur, which is necessary to collagen production in the body, garlic also provides lipoic acid and taurine that help rebuild collagen fibers that have been damaged. Black and green olives are also rich in sulfur Wakame seaweed which is a great source of omega 3, one of the best for vegans, great for intestinal health, full of vitamins and minerals, a particularly good source of iron, calcium, magnesium and iodine. Shiitake mushrooms give the most amazing, comforting flavor. Full of vitamins and minerals, great source of vitamin D, especially if sun dried, zinc and B vitamins. Contains all essential amino acids. Also a prebiotic. Coconut oil and olive oil are Healthy fats with a good omega ratio that help absorb nutrients. Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory plus adds delicious flavor and a beautiful color. One of the key points to keep in mind is that it is possible to provide everything your body needs to produce collagen by eating a balanced diet. Thank You for watching! Bacon is one of the most sought after foods in the entire world. Although not the healthiest food you could be eating it certainly is one of the most delicious. Unfortunately it's off the menu for Vegans and the limited bacon alternatives they have at most health food stores fail to live up to the standards bacon lovers have come to expect. FULL RECIPE: http://wp.me/p2x3lA-2RS BUY INGREDIENTS TO MAKE THIS: http://bit.ly/25wY8my As a bacon fan herself Candice set out to solve this problem and create a proper bacon alternative using rice paper and a bacon marinade. You start by getting out a bowl and whisk. In your bowl add Tamari, olive oil, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, a small amount of liquid smoke, some maple syrup, a bit of paprika and finally some pepper. You will then whisk this all together until you reach a smooth consistency. Next you will take two sheets of rice paper and lay them on top of each other. Then get your sharpest knife and cut them into strips, much like an actual strip of bacon. Now take a basting brush and dip it into water then brush the strips with a generous amount of water. Be sure not to over water the strips, just get them good and moist. Once you have them moistened put them together. The water is key to this process as it helps bond the two strips of rice paper together giving you a more authentic bacon experience when cooked. Repeat this process with a few strips. Once those are laid out grab your brush again and paint the strips with your marinade. After that's complete and you feel you've got a fair amount of marinade on your rice paper lay your strips out flat on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. This keeps your vegan bacon from sticking your baking pan and also makes clean up a snap. At this point you are going to see your rice paper strips beginning to look like bacon. Preheat your oven to 400' and bake your strips for seven to nine minutes. If you leave your vegan bacon strips in for too long they will definitely burn and you will want to avoid that. After all who really wants to eat any kind of burned bacon? Keep a close eye on them as cooking times will vary from oven to oven. After they are looking nice and crispy pull them out and prepare to be amazed by how much they look like real slices of actual cooked bacon. You can, if you so choose, devour this bacon immediately. If you make a bigger batch and put it in the fridge it will get soft again giving you some interesting options. Candice likes to wrap the softer vegan bacon around King Oyster Mushrooms but the bottom line is that the sky is the limit. Anything you could wrap bacon around you can definitely wrap this vegan bacon around, you could even have bacon on your veggie burgers. Don't be afraid to get creative. While it is impossible to truly duplicate the flavor of actual bacon Candice claims this recipe is the closest your going to get as a vegan. What are you waiting for?
